It was an unusual situation for the New England Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Team Monday afternoon as they rescued a young, female harp seal from a seaside cliff along Boston’s North Shore.
The animal was discovered by Katie Duffy of Beverly on Sunday.
The seal was health and responsive on Sunday when the Whale Center of New England checked on it and therefore was in no immediate danger. However, on Monday citizens discovered the seal had fallen into a small crevice and she couldn’t get out.
Usually wildlife officials aren’t allowed to intervene with a wild animal unless it is injured. A rescue team was formed after the seal got stuck.
Aquarium staff found the seal in significant distress with labored breathing.
After the rescue, the seal was given an medical examination which proved the animal was in good condition. She was then released back into the water.
When someone asked Duffy if the small seaside cliff had a name she chuckled, replying “It’s now Seal Rock!”
Seals commonly haul out of the water to rest. The weekend's particularly high tides due to the full moon had given the seal a little higher access on the cliff.
