Anheuser-Busch theme parks face possible sale
Analysts see InBev spinning off assets that aren't part of core business

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- When InBev launched its takeover of Anheuser-Busch Cos., it vowed a secure future for the company's 12 U.S. breweries.
Things are a little less certain for Shamu the killer whale, SeaWorld's star performer.
Including its three SeaWorld parks, the St. Louis beermaker owns 10 theme parks nationwide, lumped together as the Busch Entertainment Corp.
Every one of them is a noncore asset that could end up on the block after Anheuser-Busch's (BUD:Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc
board agreed Sunday to be acquired by InBev in a $52 billion deal the two hope to complete before the end of the year.
InBev (BE:000379310: news, chart, profile) spokeswoman Marianne Amssoms said the company had not yet decided what to do with the theme parks, but that they "are very mindful of their important role in those communities and will seek to help preserve that role."
The future is uncertain for Shamu the killer whale, SeaWorld's star performer.
Belgium-based InBev, known for building its international brewery empire through acquisitions and cost-cutting, could choose to spin off BEC to pay down part of the massive loan it took out to buy Anheuser-Busch.
Dennis Spiegel, president of International Theme Park Services Inc., said that because of the parks' good margins and pristine condition, he expects the whole lot to hit the market and sell for $3.5 billion to $4 billion.
He said that either way, he thinks BEC's parks would have ended up sold -- whether it was because InBev sold them to pay on their loan or because A-B would need the money to defend itself from InBev's bid.
"These properties will not be put at a fire-sale level by InBev, nor would they have if they had been sold by Anheuser-Busch," Spiegel added. "If you would have told me a year ago that SeaWorld would have been spun off, I would have said 'What have you been smoking?'"
An international suitor or private-equity group will be most likely to buy the parks, according to Spiegel.
"Certainly Cedar Fare and Six Flags have their own issues, and it doesn't look like it's something that Disney would do -- they typically don't buy other brands -- and Universal is not in the market to be expanding," he commented. "I think whoever gets them will hang onto them."
The future of four BEC amusement parks slated to open in Dubai in 2012 is also uncertain. An Anheuser-Busch spokeswoman said she couldn't comment, recommending it was "best to check with InBev on their future."
BEC currently has amusement parks in California, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.
BEC has been successful in the past, drawing about 22 million visitors a year and posting profits of $162.9 million in 2007, $144.3 million in 2006 and $127.7 million in 2005.
But during what Spiegel called a "perfect storm" slapping theme parks -- soaring energy and oil prices and a dwindling economy -- BEC posted $3.8 million loss in the first quarter of 2008.
The industry hopes those same economic doldrums will cause people to shy away from longer vacations and instead make visits to their more local theme parks, Spiegel said.
Anheuser-Busch agreed Sunday to a takeover by InBev that will create the world's largest beermaker. See full story.
While InBev said that it plans to keep all 12 of Anheuser's U.S. breweries going, it has kept quiet about what will happen to the company's other assets.
Shares of Anheuser-Busch closed Monday up 0.56%, or 37 cents, to $66.87 a share on the New York Stock Exchange.

What About Shamu?

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- News of an Anheuser-Busch buyout was just getting to the folks who had been at the company's owned theme-park all day Monday.

So far tourists don’t seem too worried. One seemed to think that the move will be a good deal for the park considering the amount of foreign visitors to Central Florida.

All the visitors had one concern: the price of admission. It is still too early to speculate on exactly what will happen to SeaWorld, Aquatica and Discovery Cove. Neither InBev nor Anheuser-Busch was addressing that subject Monday.

Even in the pages and pages of statements no mention of the Busch Entertainment group's future.

Monday InBev's CEO had plenty to say about what's next, but left the theme-parks out of it.

"We will continue to be very committed to St. Louis,” Carlos Brito said. “The roots of the beer as a company as a brand Budweiser. We are not closing any of the breweries in the US. The 12 breweries will remain open.”

Many are speculating that InBev will sell off the Busch Entertainment Group. The president of the international theme park services Dennis Spiegel said that could actually be a great move for the 7500 employees.

“The parks are very profitable,” Spiegel said. “In all 10 Anheuser Busch owned theme parks. Sales at more than a billion dollars. For employees, if there is a sale, it's possible not only could they keep their jobs, but get in at the ground level of new company and make a little profit of their own.”

If you ever get to the states you got to go to their Sea Worlds they are incredible, they make our Gold Coast, Australia, one look like crap.

Their future is uncertain so this may be the last chance, I have been to Orlando's twice and once in Sandiego, both excellent, but the shamu show in Orlando would be the best.

I hate it how they take wild Orca's and imprison them though

yea... I can't account for all of them but I do know for sure at Orlando (I forgot names here) the main one was injured and would of died if left in wild, she later breed and now her calves are now just in there. Of course there is alot more Sea worlds then orlando. But at least some profit goes to ocean conservation, rest returns back to share holders.

But the point of me posting this was not directed at captivity but rather that this sell off could give alot of death orders... where will all these orcas go? they can't survive in the wild? let alone all the other marine life in the parks.

People see something beautiful and exotic are captivated than want to have one . It is sad. When I was a girl I dreamed of having a tiger reserve . Somewhere safe .. a home , to be safe and not broken aaaayhhhh hurts the heart ... but I am preaching to the choir ...that is it for tonight ...I go into the night .

I'm a fish geek and I was HORRIFIED by the advice on fish care that PETA released. Seriously their heart is in the right place but for the love of god they should get specialist to look over their publications.

My question is... if they sell sea world WTF are they gonna do with Phelps? (http://www.theonion.com/content/news/michael_phelps_returns_to_his_tank)

Actually this could be a good thing for the Free Corky campaign, if there is talk of having to move the orcas. One of the orcas who acts as "Shamu" at San Diego is Corky (A16), who is a member of the A5 matriline of the Northern Resident population of orcas off BC's NW coast. She still speaks her language and her sisters are still alive. It's been proven that these orcas will accept members who speak the language back into the family.

Do these guys own Miami Seaquarium? That's where Lolita is...
