The federal government is opening a new front in its decades-old clash with anti-sealing groups, shifting the battlefield from ice floes to the Internet.

Concerned that seal protests timed for the Vancouver Winter Olympics may further bloody the country's reputation, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade posted a contract for a company to monitor and neutralize “well-organized anti-sealing groups” who are cultivating vast support online through Facebook, Twitter and other social-networking sites.

One such group, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, recently launched a site that features the cute Olympic mascots Miga, Quatchi and Sumi murdering a frightened seal. Several other sites run by Humane Society International, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society all post videos of Canadian hunters clubbing seals and dragging their bleeding carcasses across the ice.

The DFAIT tender, posted Dec. 17, suggests the Conservatives realize they're being seriously out-manoeuvred online. Wily environmental groups are “leveraging Web 2.0 technologies and platforms to build communities of interest” by “posting videos, images and other details (frequently incorrect or disingenuous) on platforms like YouTube and Flickr where sharing and viewership are maximized,” according to a federal abstract the contract tendering site MERX.

To repulse that growing online presence, the federal government aims to spend between $50,000 and $100,000 on a firm that can help in “correcting false information and dispelling myths about the Canadian seal hunt,” according to Dana Cryderman, a foreign affairs spokeswoman.

Among those misconceptions, Ms. Cryderman said, is that Canada is callous in its regard for animal welfare.

“Canada goes to great lengths to ensure a humane, well-regulated and sustainable seal hunt,” she wrote in an e-mail. “Canada's Marine Mammal Regulations stipulate that seals must be killed quickly using only high-powered rifles, shotguns firing slugs, clubs or hakapiks.”

Not quickly enough for the cameras, however. With the rise of video-sharing sites, gruesome clips showing hunters bludgeoning seals until ice floes are covered in blood have circulated the world, offering vivid challenges to any claims of humanity.

In May, the European Union voted to ban the import of seal products, citing cruel hunting methods. The ban goes into effect in August of next year, and would effectively shutter the largest remaining market for Canadian seal pelts.

The U.S., Mexico and several other countries banned seal imports as far back as 1974.

“You now have more than a billion people whose governments have passed seal bans,” said Michael O'Sullivan, executive director of the Humane Society of Canada. “That means one in every six people on Earth don't believe in what the Canadian government is doing.”

Despite the outrage abroad, politicians of all stripes have found that defending sealers makes for good optics at home. Liberal, Conservative and New Democratic MPs have all publicly supported the industry, successfully lobbying the parliamentary restaurant to place seal meat on its menu.

But the political backing cannot mask the industry's plummeting fortunes.

The total hunt in 2009 netted just $1-million, down from between $2.5-million and $20-million in previous years. Prices have sagged as low as $15, from a 2006 peak of $105.

With the industry in tatters, anti-sealing campaigners expect the government's online countermeasures to have little effect on their battle to ban the hunt.

Good post animux, interesting how the internet can spread the truth like wildfire, The G-Man can do what he wants online, it is too little too late for them at this point. The video is damning enough and there is little that can be said if but a lie to try an convince people that sealing is being done in a humane manner.

I also wonder what are the longest recorded videos of sealing out there, that is if one can see it from start to finish or if most out there are just clips.

Then I think of the impact The Cove had and wonder if there is anyone out there planning on such a documentary on sealing.

I love that! The DISSINFORMATION extends right into the report. The financial FACT is that the highest profit that the Sealing industry in Canada has EVER made was a bit over 7 million! That is it. They are sowing their lies even into what should be better established reports. And the second lie in that report is that it is popular with a large contingency back home. This affects the New Foundlanders.

LETS BE CLEAR EVERYONE ; This is precisely the insidious nature of the Canadian government. This report is Propaganda generated from within THEIR source. It is dressed up to appear as if it is anti-seal hunting. Do not be fooled. The source has dropped hints to those who know, that smacks heavily of a Government involvement.

So why would they post that sort of disinformation? Because it shows the world ( once they accept that it is coming from an "anti-sealing" source ) that there is strong support for this in Canada ( a lie ) and to establish a false profit context ( again a lie ) to make it seem like they are fighting for a profitable industry. This is part of a VERY cleverly organized effort to gain public sympathy for their cause. Just because this report "appears" to be anti-sealing do not be fooled. It is a covert technique called a "Foot in the door measure" that is used as a propaganda tool by Governments and private concerns to mislead their way into greater and greater justification.

Canada has hired a specialist firm of PR pros and apparently these folks are far more cunning than the Government itself. The Person in Canada to support against their BS is Senator Mac Harb. He has long been the sole voice of opposition in the Canadian government fighting the seal hunt.

Mac Harb - Liberal Party of Canada
Province: Ontario
Senatorial Designation: Ontario
Appointed on the advice of: Chrétien (Lib.)
Telephone: 613-996-2379
Fax: 613-996-2318

There is his contact info from my websites eco-news page 2.

Be clear on the Financial facts about the Seal Hunt. It has never earned much more than 7 Million dollars US. However it is threatening a 10 BILLION dollar financial deal with Europe. For a VERY tiny community of sealers from New Foundland who are in good with members in charge of the DFO and with Eco-Rapist Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Why they would and continue to risk a 10 billion dollar trade deal over a 3-7 million dollar seal industry is one of the most mind blowing concepts of insanity that the world has ever seen. But it's out there. Just senseless and on a level of idiocy and illogical thinking that I tend to call "Galactically stupid!" So there you have it. The PR firm ( unlike the Harper Administration and DFO ) is very sharp and clever. So do keep an eye on what you are reading and research the facts! The propaganda campaign is already in full swing people!

Although I have never clubbed a seal to death, I have witnessed the slaughter of calves in a meatworks, the calves destined for veal, are or were bashed over the head with a iron club. Not a pretty sight.

No doubt the men who delight in bashing baby seals like what they are doing, myself I found the 12 months I worked at that meat works hardened my soul towards the suffering of animals, and of the unnessary cruelty that is inflicted on them, if the Canadians want to still continue to slaughter seals, and that comes from their government, then that government should be condemned, and hang their heads in shame.

You don't have to be in newspapers to know that journalists can be biased in what seems a balanced story.
We should send a few letters to the editor of this newspaper and point out misrepresentations that have been made and do this every time a story is obviously on the side of the slaughterers in whatever news source it comes from -

This is the letter I sent them

Your article about sealing (Ottawa seeks help with seal message, by Patrick White) was heavily biased in favour of the seal hunters in Canada. Maybe some of the money destined for Government propaganda could be used to tell the world why it is illegal to film video footage of this disgraceful slaughter.
