....

3 Activists go and buy a bucket of butric acid and have to pay $30. They share the costs and so each gives $10 to the salesperson.

They carry the bucket to the nearby dock to load it on their ship.

Suddenly the salesperson realises that the butric acid is on "special" for only $25. He sends his assistant with $5 after the activists.

Luckily the assistant reaches them before they disappear and signals they should wait. While the activists wait the assistant wonders how the hell he can give each an equal amount back.

His solution is to give each activist $1 and pocket the remaining $2.

The activists go and load the ship and the assistant goes back to the shop....

....but, hey, wait a minute:

The activists now each paid $9 for the butric acid. So, 3*9=$27. Add the $2 the assistant pocketed = (27+2) = $29

Where the f...... did the missing Dollar go?

The following day two Greenpeace members go and buy a couple of square meters of net lace (because this is what Sissies wear) at the same shop.

They have to pay $30 for their piece. So they share the costs (because they are both Sissies like most of them) and each gives $15 to the salesperson.

They take the net lace and go outside.

Suddenly the salesperson realises that net lace was on special (because it was mother's day) and only costs $25. So, he sends his assistant to try to catch the Sissies.

The assistant has learned from the previous day and as he runs to catch them he figures out what to give the Greenpeace members. He thinks keeping $3 this time is just fair.

He manages to reach both of them just before they want to disappear on their Tandem.

As planned he gives both Sissies $1 each and pockets $3.

All are happy!

.....

But, hey, wait a minute:

Subtract the $2 Dollars the Sissies got as a refund from the $30 they originally paid, they paid $28. If you add the $3 the assistant pocketed $28 + $3 = $31.

Aha!

There is the missing dollar !!!

....And an explanation how Greenpeace secretly supports Seashepherd by being embarrassingly OUTSMARTED!!!!!

Note: The butric acid customers were members of SSCS, of course!!! (in case you didn't figure that out....)

Hi Marino, are you saying you can't figure out where the mistake in thinking lies?

I am very proud of you that you are willing to admit it. I am sure others have read it and just didn't feel they would like to admit it.

Rest assured, I thought about it for a while.

I even bothered to take out the calculator. And probably like you I am not considering myself to be un-intelligent.

Again, my respect!!!

Let's leave it for a while ... I will provide an explanation later.

If you have a bucket with the volume of 10 Liters and you fill in 5 Liters of water...

a) the bucket is filled to the half?
or
b) the bucket is emptied to the half?

3x10=30
30-5=25
25:3=8,3
8,3+1=9,3
9,3x3=28
28+2=30

No missing dollar ;-))

However, it seems the Dollar is still missing!

Why do you add 1 Dollar to 8.333333 in your explanation?

It is for sure that they paid 30 Dollars and got one back each (as the story tells).

So each one definetly only paid 9 Dollars (3x9=27 and NOT 3x9.33333).

So, what do you say now?

Any other takers???

Count on the first hand - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Count on the second hand - 10, 9, 8, 7, 6.

5 + 6 = 11! You must have eleven fingers!

Hi Shai'tan,

I am assuming you try to explain the brain cracker with the mistake or thinking error that somehow the first or last number was included into the counting ???? (As sometimes happens if you add days and you come up with a different date, for example).

However, this is not the reason why the Dollar is missing and re-appearing.

Are you keen enough to have another go?

P.S. unfortunately the answer is not entirely correct....
they only paid 9 $ each for sure.

10 initially and they got 1$ back each (from the assistant).

And my calculater tells me: 10 - 1 = 9

Well, no:
The shopkeeper got 30$ initially and then he gave 5$ back (via the assistant but he definately gave it back). He did not pocket any money because he had to book the 25$ in (for the owner maybe) and he did the right thing when giving the 5$ back to the customers (because he overcharged).

I love it!

I guess I love it because I had a real hard time not becoming mental myself....

Yaaaa,so really they only paid 25 bucks
they all received 1 dollar back
so devide 25 dollars by 3=equally
that leaves another dollar
so that makes it 8 dollars plus 33/3,that they paid the shop keepereach
now
the guy who ran after them has five dollars
he gave them 1 dollar back each
and he kept two dollars
there is no missing dollar
:)

Kadevu
24-07-2008, 12:18:PM
Not really, Ange....

they paid 27 $ (30$ initially and then they got 3$ back 30-3=27). 27$ divided by 3 is = 9. And that's what they paid each.

Where the f...... did the missing Dollar go?

The mistake is in adding the $2 that the shop assistant pocketed. When working out the total amount paid by the activists (3 times 9 = 27) this accounts for the $2 the assistant pocketed already. To then add another $2 makes no sense at all as we'd be accounting for the money the assistant has twice and forgetting about the money given back to the activists.

you are getting close....

this accounts for the $2 the assistant pocketed already. To then add another $2 makes no sense at all as we'd be accounting for the money the assistant has twice and forgetting about the money given back to the activists.

But the story doesn't say anything about adding 2$ twice. The activists payed 27$, that's for sure. The assistant "earned" 2$ that's for sure. So that adds to 29$ not 30$.

can you explain? Maybe in other words?

k.

I mean if we're trying to account for all the money in the system, then we look at $27 as the money the activists paid. This includes the $2 the assistant didn't give back to the activists. So in the calculation where it adds $2 to $27, we're accounting for the amount of money pocketed by the assistant twice. This is why we don't get a total of $30. In order to account for all the money in the system we should add the money the activists got back (ie $3) to the money the activists paid ($27) which of course comes to $30.

Does that make more sense when put in better words? Or am I still off?

In my words it sounds like this:
There is no Dollar missing:
The shop got 25,
The customers payed 27 (got 3$ back from initial 30),
the customers should have only payed 25 but they had to spend 2$ more because the assistant had no change,
the 2$ were extra cost for them.

Took long enough .....

"It only took 5 minutes and half of my money was gone", the one activist told his buddy when he came from buying butric acid.

"And now my Dollars are excactly half the cents I originally had. And the cents are excactly as many as I had Dollars before".

Because both activists are smart, the buddy knew immediately how much he spent and how much he had in the beginning.

Do you?
